Mary Beth O’Connor
Mary Beth O’Connor is a former federal administrative law judge, author, and long-term recovery advocate who has been sober since 1994. A survivor of severe childhood abuse who began using drugs in adolescence and was injecting methamphetamine by 17, she eventually transformed her life, getting sober at 32 and later earning a law degree from UC Berkeley. Her memoir, From Junkie to Judge: One Woman’s Triumph Over Trauma and Addiction, chronicles that journey from addiction to the bench and beyond. Today, she speaks, writes, and trains on substance use disorder, trauma, PTSD, and multiple pathways to recovery, emphasizing that there is no one-size-fits-all approach.
